Is Your Design Business Model Actually Profitable?

Let’s Compare These Four Different Design Business Models

In the world of providing creative services, one of the biggest challenges is finding the right balance between the number of projects you take on, the time you dedicate to each, and the income you generate. Let's dive into four different design business models to see how VIP days can impact your income and workload.

Business Model #1:

Three Long-Term Design Clients per Month

Your work schedule might look something like this:

In this scenario, you have three long-term clients, each with a project lasting three months.

In this setup, you're earning $4932 per month.

However, your energy and focus might be scattered throughout the month due to the need to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Expect delayed responses, potential late payments, and projects going over their deadlines. This approach can be less profitable due to the increased hours spent managing clients and projects.

Business Model #2:

One Long-Term Client with Two VIP Days

Now, let's consider a model that includes one long-term client and two VIP days each month:

In this scenario, your monthly income increases to $6333/mo.

You are less scattered with managing multiple long-term clients, and your focus and energy management significantly improve.

You can concentrate on one client at a time, leading to a more efficient workflow. However, you may still end up with a full calendar, giving you less freedom.

Business Model #3:

Two VIP Days with Two VIP Weeks

Next, let's consider a model that includes two VIP days and two Design Intensive weeks each month:

In this setup, your income jumps up to $8800 per month.

This model offers a perfect balance of money, time, and options for your clients. You have more open space in your calendar, which offers mental clarity and the freedom to work on other income ideas or passion projects for your business.

This is the model we currently offer in our business because we like to do 1-day intensives and 1-week websites. We have plenty of space in our calendar and are only focused on ONE client per week.

Business Model #4:

Four VIP Days per Month

Finally, let's examine a model where you have four VIP days each month:

In this scenario, you're earning a whopping $8000 per month and only working 4 days total on client projects.

This model is the most profitable option with more space for personal projects and less time spent managing long-term clients. You have significantly more open space on your calendar compared to the first model.

This is what we offered for many years until we recently decided to offer a week-long intensive to our design services. And the open space in our calendar? The BEST thing about it.

The Impact of VIP Days and Design Intensives

As you can see from these examples, incorporating VIP days or design intensives into your business model can significantly increase your income while reducing the stress of managing multiple long-term projects.
